No Order Magazine talks with the artist.
My name is Kaput, I am an artist that has been involved with graffiti writing for over 25 years. I'm originally from Vancouver, BC Canada and now live in Brisbane. I mainly focus on painting, illustration and mural works.
How did your career begin?

When I was around 12, my dad's friends invented a game board called ‘Rushhour’. The object of the game was to leave home, head to work and make it back home. They asked me to draw up a highly detailed game board, and it required about a year to complete. This would have been my first art gig and the beginning of my career.

Do you have a set process when it comes to making work and is there a part of that process that people may find surprising?

When creating a painting, I start with a variety of rough sketches until I find a composition I like. From there I draw the master sketch, or ‘final drawing’. Once completed I use graphite transfer paper to move the line work onto the canvas or wood, starting to paint, constantly adding and sometimes taking away things as I go along. The devil is in the details.

Is there a memorable moment in your journey as a creative that you didn’t know would impact your career?

One day, several years back, I was checking out an op shop, like I usually do. I found a Santa Claus wooden cutout and thought it might be cool to repurpose it. I primed and painted it to appear like a giant, gross head. People seemed to dig the piece - someone bought it right away and I even had a request to do another one. So, I borrowed a jigsaw and a foldout bench from a mate (which I never gave back, thanks Ricko!) and proceeded to make my own custom cutouts and haven't stopped since.
